 LA Opera presents “25 Recitals for 25 Seasons: LA Opera’s Young Artist Celebration,” a series of community recitals featuring members of the Company’s Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program that will take place from April 3 through May 15, 2011.  These recitals will not only honor LA Opera’s 25^th Anniversary Season, they are also intended to serve as a musical “thank you” to the many community members and institutions with whom the company has worked during the quarter-century since LA Opera’s inaugural production in 1986.” In partnership with the hosting venues, which include museums, libraries, schools, hospitals and concert halls, most recitals will be offered to the public free of charge.

Join us for a sneak-peek, concert-version of LA Opera's Secondary In-School Opera, The White Bird of Poston, before it begins touring to secondary schools.

Written by Eli Villanueva and Leslie Stevens, THE WHITE BIRD OF POSTON is the story of a fifteen-year-old Japanese American girl, Akiko, who is sent to the Poston internment camp in the Arizona desert shortly after the attacks on Pearl Harbor. She encounters unforeseen obstacles but also blessings, including a Native American young man, a talking Coyote, and the spirit of her Grandmother. Through lessons in Courage, Faith and her own Prejudice, Akiko finds a way to stay connected to her traditions and move forward as American young woman. She will be a leader for her community.

In the school performances, this 47 minute original opera will have four professional principal singers, three professional musicians with original set, costume and lighting design. The participating students will become the singing, moving, acting chorus; playing Japanese American Internees, American soldiers, and the animals of the desert.

The story was inspired in part by the watercolor paintings of Chizuko Judy Sugita de Quieroz, who was in Poston at 9 years old.
