In preparation for the upcoming presentation by LA Opera of Charles Gounod's Romeo and Juliette, the Opera League of Los Angeles has invited Drama Department head of UCLA and noted Shakespeare scholar, Dr. Michael Hackett to present information on how Gounod and other composers adapted Shakespeare’s plays to the operatic stage. In addition, noted musicologist Dr. Simon Williams from UC Santa Barbara will present information on the music of Gounod as it relates both to Shakespeare and to French opera and the break with the French tradition made by Gounod in the 19th Century.
